Research

I study the relationship between ethics and politics in situations where public action comes under extreme normative pressure. Torture, just war, and international conflict are some of my main substantive interests. However, most political choices and disputes are argued in ethical terms on some level. One choice is said to be better than the others, though the reasons why are sometimes (often) obscured. I'm interested in those reasons why some things are good or better, while others are bad or worse. For some examples of my work, see:
